Usually veterinarians amputate at the shoulder or hip but with prosthetic devices they can amputate at a knee or elbow joint so less is removed.
Cassidy Cassidy was found in the street and was placed in an animal shelter. He only had three legs. He was adopted and his new owners took really good care of him, including helping him get an artificial leg. Scientists who worked on him are hoping the advanced technique used on his prosthetic leg might someday be used on humans. Cassidy is health and happy now.

PolarPolar is a golden retriever. When he was born he could not use his hind legs. His owners spent all all the money they could on testing to find his problem but with no success. Polar was going to be euthanized until they realized the possibility of prosthetic legs. Today Polar is a well-loved and happy dog.

Derby Derby was born with deformed front legs. First Derby tried a cart with wheels to get around but it was awkward. Luckily his foster parent worked for a high-tech company called 3D Systems. They built a prosthetic that now helps Derby run two or three miles every day! Best of all, they saved the images of the prosthetic online so that they can be printed with a 3D printer. This will help even more animals in the future.
